Turmeric (Curcuma longa)


Turmeric is a rhizomatous perennial herbaceous plant. Phytochemical components of turmeric include compounds called curcuminoids such as curcumin demethoxycurcumin and bisdemethoxycurcumin.In addition volatile oils include turmerone atlantone andzingiberene.Other constituents are sugars, proteins, and resins. It has a particular affinity for the blood, and is thereby able to circulate its powerful health benefits throughout the body.



Turmeric has been used in Asia for thousands of years and is a major part of Ayurveda, Siddha medicine, Unani, and traditional Chinese medicine. It was first used as a dye, later for its medicinal properties. Turmeric grows wild in the forests of South and Southeast Asia where it is collected for use in Indian traditional medicine. Friedrich Ratzel reported in The History of Mankind turmeric powder was applied for embellishment of body, clothing, utensils, and ceremonial uses.
